I don’t usually embed YouTube videos (I prefer other, higher-quality services), but here’s one just to prove I can. You can see a longer, high-definition version of this video at http://vimeo.com/4903325. Note, too, that I made two different “cuts” from the same original footage. This can be a real money saver, in that I can make a 30-second TV spot, a 3-minute online promo piece, and a 30-minute infomercial-length presentation from the same raw material,
Originally shot for the WTSP “citizen journalism” program, but I like this so much that I’m posting it here, too. Sometimes fun/crazy/wild get the point across better than “serious” reporting.
The client wanted it kept under 90 seconds, ideally closer to 60. So that’s what we did. Note that the production values in this piece are *far better* than you usually see in screencapture-based software promotion videos. And the cost? Crazy-low.
This YellowPages.com video features real Macy’s employees, not actors. Note that — as in virtually all of my promo videos — I show them actually doing their jobs, not just talking about them. Admittedly, the fact that Macy’s CEO Dean Burnside is exceptionally well-spoken helps this video look good, but even a less-articulate but 100% sincere owner or manager (like you) is a better spokesperson for your business than the world’s smoothest voiceover talent, especially when you have me coaching you so that you look and sound your best on camera.
Harley Brook is an engaging young lawyer. As a solo practitioner, the only people who work in his office are his assistant, Kristin Willis, and Harley himself. The challenge here — as in almost all promotional videos — was to tell people why they should call Brook instead of another lawyer. A half-hour interview gave me enough points to work with (experience as prosecutor makes him a more effective defense lawyer; knows “the system” inside and out; well-credentialed, as shown by diplomas and certificates on his walls; and — important when serving a moderate-income clientele — he accepts credit cards. But Harley is not just nice. He’s tough when that’s what’s called for, which is why I opened with him striding, Rocky-like, down the stairs of the old courthouse near his office. Some of the work I do requires non-specific “background” or “b-roll” video showing scenic places in the Sarasota - Bradenton area. I’m in the middle of one such project now; a video aimed at European property investors who may be interested in our pretty part of Florida. I’ll probably use five or 10 seconds of this fountain in that video, but I also looped together five minutes of it, with its natural sound, as a stress-reliever for people (like you, maybe?) who want a few moments of scenic beauty on their computer screens instead of work, work, work all the time. FYI: I happily accept pure b-roll assignments if you need some fine scenic shots of Southwest Florida.
The customer interaction in this video (please follow this link to see how it looks embedded at YellowPages.com) was not rehearsed or anticipated. To get a shot like this, you need to be ready — shotgun mic at the correct volume level, white balance set for the current lighting conditions… generally on your toes. I get testimonials or live customer interactions whenever possible. There is simply no better sales message than one that comes from a customer.
Dr. Thom Clark, DVM, has an engaging personality and interacts extremely well with his four-footed patients. I worked hard to capture his work with patients, which includes both traditional western veterinary medicine and eastern treatment techniques including acupuncture. Note that I got down on the floor and shot from a “dog’s eye view” in several scenes. It’s important to bring viewers into the video, and this was a good way to do it in Dr. Clark’s case. Gifts.tv is local startup that’s providing online video advertising and direct ecommerce capability to purveyors of gift and “fun” items. Gifts.tv instigators Cate Colgan and Ginger Smith are both great personalities, and will happily narrate sales videos for vendors, but the long-run hope is for most vendors to tout their own wares, because no one can give a more sincere pitch for a business and its products than that business’s owner.
